Senior Accountant
Our client is seeking a hands-on Senior Accountant to run the day-to-day accounting function and lead a two-person team. This role keeps the books, completes the month-end close and reconciliations for the company's bank accounts, handles payroll accounting and underwriter and tax filings, and directs the Accounting Assistant's daily work. The Senior Accountant works within approval limits set by the President, who signs off on high-value disbursements, banking changes, and the monthly financial statements.
Key Responsibilities
- Daily Cash & Escrow Activity: Review daily activity across operating, escrow, premium, recording, and payroll accounts. Resolve Positive Pay and banking exceptions, escalating suspicious items to the President. Approve wires, refunds, and check requests prepared by the Accounting Assistant within assigned limits, and route items above those limits for second approval.
- Month-End Close & Reconciliations: Complete the monthly close, including journal entries, accruals, and reclasses. Prepare bank and escrow (three-way) reconciliations and resolve file-level discrepancies.
- Financial Statements: Prepare monthly financial statements, the P&L trend package, and volume and payroll-to-premium reports for review by the President and ownership.
- Payroll & Contractor Payments: Prepare closer (1099) pay runs, payroll funding, PEO invoice reconciliations, payroll journal entries, and year-end W-2/1099 reconciliation in coordination with HR.
- Accounts Payable: Review vendor payments and credit card coding prepared by the Accounting Assistant, and independently verify any change to payment instructions before it is entered.
- Underwriter & Regulatory Filings: Prepare the monthly underwriter premium remittance, the annual Data Call, and the unclaimed funds (escheatment) report. Prepare schedules and support for the underwriter audit.
- Year-End & Renewals Support: Prepare fiscal-year financials and workpapers for the outside CPA, and provide revenue and premium data for E&O, cyber, and other insurance renewals.
- Team Lead & Process: Assign, train, and review the Accounting Assistant's daily work, and give input on performance. Keep SOPs current, follow segregation of duties consistent with ALTA Best Practices, and serve as the first escalation point for the Title operations team.
